How to clean my silver jewelry
If you got here it's because your amulets are yellow or black, it's normal for this to happen so don't worry they can be as good as new again!!
Why do jewelry turn yellow-black?
Silver in contact with air, water, or chemicals such as chlorine, perfumes, and others can accelerate the color change. This darkening, contrary to popular belief, is not oxidation but sulfuration. This chemical process occurs when hydrogen sulfide in the air comes into contact with silver jewelry, which is when it begins to change color. This is when silver sulfide (Ag2S) is produced, turning it yellow or darkening it.
What other factors can accelerate the process?
- The pH of our skin
- Body sweat
- Moisturizing creams or sunscreen
- Soaps, alcohols, chlorine, seawater and detergents.
- Cosmetics, hairsprays, perfumes, etc.
How do I clean them?
- Good news! We have FREE jewelry cleaning service in our store! Luis Pasteur 6677, Local 9. (up to 5 charms).
- One way to clean that has worked for us is to use baking soda with hot water (to form a paste) and carefully clean it with a toothbrush. Finally, wash with soap and water or plenty of water. For best results, use a jewelry polishing cloth at the end of the process.
- Another good, but slightly less effective, option is to use toothpaste and brush the entire tooth. Once done, remove it with soap and water and then let it dry.
- Be especially careful with jewelry that's woven or has stones. In these cases, it's best to clean them with just the cloth.
Remember to store your charms in our cloth bags. It will help keep them clean.
